Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 26, 2026. This notice describes the current PlacesOut application, an independent project by Atlas.
Browsing and city data
You do not need an account to browse PlacesOut. City search and comparison run in your browser using a static city index. We have not implemented forms that collect personal details, analytics tags or advertising tags.
Our economic and housing indicators are aggregate public estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey. Your visits do not initiate Census API queries.
Cookies and local storage
The application does not set analytics or advertising cookies. With JavaScript enabled, your privacy choice is saved in your browser’s localStorage under placesout.cookie-consent.v1. This necessary preference record contains a policy version, your choice, disabled optional categories and an expiration time. It is not a tracking identifier and is not sent to a server by this control.
The preference is valid for 180 days. After expiration, we ask again; the browser may retain the expired record until it is replaced or you clear site storage. Clearing site storage also removes your preference. If storage is blocked, optional services stay disabled.
Use Cookie preferences in the footer to review or change your choice at any time. Accept All and Reject Optional currently leave analytics and advertising disabled because neither service is installed. Future optional services require a new notice and fresh consent.
Delivery services and external links
Web hosting and image delivery necessarily receive network requests, including an IP address and browser request information. City photographs are stored in Cloudflare R2 and served through our media delivery configuration and Next.js image optimization. The public site does not fetch photographs directly from Wikimedia Commons.
Photograph credits link to Wikimedia Commons and the applicable license. Census and other source links take you to external sites with their own privacy practices. Our offline image discovery process uses Wikimedia APIs; browsing a city page does not run that process.
Hosting-provider logging, retention and processing locations must be confirmed before public launch. We do not state a retention period for infrastructure logs that has not been verified.
