About PlacesOut

PlacesOut is an independent project by Atlas. We help readers explore U.S. cities and compare population, income and housing estimates from official public sources.

Data with context

We use the U.S. Census Bureau’s ACS five-year estimates for 2020–2024. Our six indicators are population, median household income, median gross rent, median home value, rent burden of at least 30% and severe rent burden of at least 50%.

Profiles show units, reference periods and sources. Comparisons place values side by side without assigning winners or rankings. Estimates have methodological limits and are not a substitute for current local research.

City photographs

Available city photographs originate from Wikimedia Commons and are prepared for delivery through Cloudflare R2. Each photograph retains its author, source, license and modification notice. Expand its attribution details to learn more. Where an approved photograph is unavailable, we show a placeholder.

Editorial independence

PlacesOut is not affiliated with the U.S. Census Bureau or Wikimedia. The Atlas signature identifies the project’s portfolio relationship; it does not change the PlacesOut product identity.
